Everyone keeps asking how it is to have Colin working with me this summer. We've only worked "together" a week--so I'm not sure it is a good indication of how well this is working out. But if you count the fact that he has not murdered me yet, I'd say it is a success so far.
Being that he's in a different department from me, in a different building waaaaay across the parking lot--I think it's a good set-up. I drop him off in the morning and pick him up at the end of the day. If the weather is nice, he comes over for lunch and we sit at the picnic table outside of my building.
It's nice to have his company for the harried commute each day and I really like that we get a chance to talk a little bit. Okay, so we talk about work and stuff, but it's nice to have him physically here to talk to. Telephones and computer screens are no substitute for having your sonny boy next to you--in person. I miss that part now that he is so far away for 8 months out of the year.
It's sweet to come around the corner from getting your coffee and see his face there--stopping in our office for some official IT business. And it catches me by surprise every time. It's a nice surprise.
I like the silly stuff--comparing notes on this person or that one, watching the cats in the parking lot and wondering what happened to all of the kittens, and discussing the merits of having a free lunch each day. It's odd to have dinner conversations at home and actually have someone there who knows what the heck you are talking about.
And while I like having him there with me 3 days a week, it's gonna make saying good-bye at the end of summer harder than ever.

The up-side and the down-side. But really it is much too early to start thinking about the end of summer. Enjoy the now!
I can tell you are making the most of these 3 months of having your son near by.
It's nice to have someone get a "window to your world." You know how they have a Take Your Child to Work Day? They should have one of them for spouses, don't you think? So each spouse can see the hell that the other person has to go through every day. I'm not kidding. I think it would do both people a world of good to get a sense of what the other has to deal with.
It brings back memories of when my son worked with me. We used to eat lunch together most days:) Both my sons worked with me one summer. My poor husband used to give us heck when we talked about work at home...LOL
Enjoy it for now.
Perhaps by the end of the summer you will be on each others' nerves.
I like to think positive. heh
Oh that's cool! I would love to work with Amber. Of course I work from home so I don't think she'd think it so great! :-)
Yea, it will be bittersweet to say "see ya" at the end of summer. Never good-bye because it's only temporary. Enjoy the extra time. :-)
As I was reading your post I was thinking that it's going to be tough when he goes back to school and it seems you've thought of that too. That's a long way off though so just enjoy it!
memories in the making. :)
That sounds wonderful! My Mommeh eats lunch alone every day, just her and her Kindle.
How cool! I was wanting to try to get my son in at my work over the summer, but he is hellbent on managing his high school football team.
Vanilla--Yep. Who knows? We may get really, really sick of each other! ;)
Terra--It's nice because we are not in the same building. We are together, but not really. It's a good compromise.
Kathy--I love to have Joe meet the people I work with and vice versa. I think it's good to have a face to stick with the wacky stories, you know? I'm sure they'd all be on their best behavior if he came in for a day to see the shenanigans though.
Mary Ann--I'll bet your husband felt left out! :) I like the lunch date part best.
Patty--Oh yeah, it's a given. Then it will be a really, really quiet drive to and from work.
Petula--The good part is that we aren't really working "together." I'm sure at the end of the summer we are gonna be really tired of each other. ;)
Beaded Tail--There are some breaks in the middle--with vacations and such, so I think the summer will fly by. I am enjoying just being with him again--I miss that part with him being away the rest of the year.
Ann--I hope they are good ones! ;)
Daisy--Oh, that is sort of sad. Maybe I can send Colin to her place to eat lunch with her! We also have parking lot kitties that come sit with us too. We have a regular crowd out there!
Lola--I think he is probably smart in doing that. He can make some friends with big muscles! ;)
We are with Vanilla, enjoy the now. Just make the best of every day. Sounds like it is going to be a great summer. Have a great week.
Well, maybe you'll be ready to have a little more space by fall.
