Commence recovery

After 4 days, 80 band kids plus 20 or so chaperones, endless walking and sightseeing, too many NYC potty stops to count and very little sleep, I am proud to say that I am still alive.  But just barely. If you have ever chaperoned a traveling school trip, you'll know why I say that.

Whether or you are 8 or 80, these tours are non-stop. Days are action-packed starting with breakfast at 7 a.m. and ending with a acquaintance with your pillow at 11 p.m.....IF you are lucky.  Sometimes, shows run late or traffic ties you up and you aren't back until later....much later.  Mix in corralling teens and wayward chaperones and it makes for some very long days.

And some very sore feet.

But then again, you see lovely sights like these:

Including an evening cruise to visit a certain lovely lady:

Performances at the Trump Tower atrium:

And the USS Intrepid:

Tour guides that are extra cute (Gary!):

And lots and lots of laughing.  We had four days of laughing.  Sometimes over funny things and sometimes just because we were so freaking tired that it was all we could do to keep from collapsing.

We had a great time--we went everywhere and saw nothing.  We were at as many exciting places as we could be in 4 days, which left us with exactly 7 minutes at each venue.  It's sort of  like speed dating, but with a city--a big, beautiful, incredible city.

It looks like you had a good time indeed Lin! You have much more energy than me to look after all those kids. LOL!

Perhaps Hubby could give you a nice foot massage now to help those tired feet. ;)

Welcome home. I miss NY with a passion.

Oh goodness, what you describe is exactly like my chaperoning trip to Greece/ Italy 2 summers ago. To a T- except that it was 14 days straight of going to bed a 12-3 am/ waking at 6 or 7. So exhausting!! And I don't know about you, but on this trip I learned how babyish some high schoolers really are. I went through ALL of my band aides thinking I wouldn't even need them, and the list goes on...

Anyway, glad to hear you had a fun time spending 7 minutes at each thing!! LOL

Welcome home, glad you had a good time. I always hate trips that are totally scheduled. It never feels like you got to see a thing

You survived...well done:)

Looks like a fun time! I haven't been to NYC before but I might have to go and find Gary! :)

That's what our band trips were like-especially Boston. It got to the point where as soon as we got on the bus to go anywhere, we'd instantly fall asleep in an attempt to catch up.

You are a saint! I did that once to DC with the band, and I would never do it again.

You are a saint. That bore repeating.

Catherine--No, I didn't have that much energy. I was going to die I was so tired! We have really good kids, a great band director and a LOT of good chaperones to make it work. I don't think Joe wants to come anywhere near my feet!

Grace--Thanks, Grace! I had a lot of fun, hence the smiles.

Veronica Lee--Thanks, pally! Isn't Gary cute?!

Pearl--Hi Pearl! I love New York, but going with a group is definitely not the way to see it. But, we still had a lot of fun and I'm glad we went. Although my feet are a bit iffy.

Paul--Yeah, that's how I'm feeling. I am exhausted, still. And my feet are KILLING me! I sure missed you and Mary on the trip!

Patty--I love NY. I do. There is no city I love more. I can't wait to go back!

Nancy--The kids weren't so bad---it was the ADULTS! Gees, the crabbing they did!! Ugh. I was mentally punching all of them. Yeah, you know how crazy these trips are--you go to everything and see nothing. But, it was still fun. :)

Ann-- Bingo. And we spent a lot of time in logistics--you know, with the buses and moving everyone. But, that is what you get on those trips and you go in expecting that. Some of the parents were unhappy with that, but that is what you sign up for.

Mary Ann--I survived AND I had fun! :)

Diane--I did! I don't know why, but I grabbed some old sandals of mine and I wore those old dogs everywhere! My feet were tired, but I never got blisters or anything.

Beaded Tail--Oh, I LOVE New York. It is gritty and exciting. And I find the people there great. Gary was ADORABLE. :)

Silver--Bingo! That's what the kids were doing--sleeping at every chance. I didn't want to miss a thing, so I kept awake to see the city. It was a great trip! :)

Liz--It's crazy, isn't it? I did that once about 7 years ago and swore I'd never do it again. Well, that was until I heard we were going to NYC. HAD to go there with the kids! They were good kids, so we had a nice time. It's the tour schedule that kills ya.

Congrats on surviving ...... it sounds like fun even with all the exhaustion and corraling.

Indeed, cute tour guides are always a plus ;)

New York rocks. I love it. The family can't understand why I am always wanting to go there. I just love it. It's not very fun to live there, though. Kinda lonely and noisy.

Did you ever read my story about how I set off the metal detectors at the Empire State Building a few years ago? Oh yeah, you aren't a REAL tourist until you get the security men going beserk....

Glad you are back. :)

it's the most wonderful city in the world.

you could spend a lifetime there and still not see it all!!

and you are very brave for doing this!! you are a rock star mom!!

Sounds like a very hectic trip--7 minutes at each stop? Bet you are glad to be back home!

Marg said...

Great COD, I am exhausted just reading about this trip. I wouldn't have made it through the first two hours.Good job on your part but I bet it was fun seeing all those things. Rest up.

Lin said...

Red dirt Girl--Well, you go in knowing all this, so you sort of "prepare" as much as you can. These trips are always this way-that's why I rarely chaperone.

Rebecca--I love NY too. I can't get enough of that city! I remember your story--you trouble maker. ;)

Debbie--I only chaperone periodically because of the pace--it's to crazy for me! I couldn't resist NY though--I'm with you, I just want to see as much as I can!

Karen--Well, it's more like and hour or two at the most--but it FEELS like 7 minutes after you find the restroom and look around a bit. It's crazy....but FUN!

Marg--These trips are all like that so you know it going in. And you bring good shoes and drink a LOT of coffee along the way!

I am so glad you had a great time. I remember when I was in New Orleans with the youth group my partner and I laughed so hard from being over tired we said we would have laughed if one of us was run over by passing bus. And being that tired and laughing made the trip better...makes all trips with kids better!

While you were away I am happy to report I am coming back around.

Sharkbytes said...

Did you wave to my baby, Steve, while you were there?

Lin said...

Jodi--that is EXACTLY where we were. We laughed at anything! And everything. And for some reason, those around us didn't think it was half as funny as we did. Buzzkills. Yes, that is the ONLY way to survive. I'm happy to see you back!

Sharky--Of course we did! :)

"Speed dating a city." I relate to that, for that describes my visit to NYC; and I suspect to this day that she withheld her very best from me in retaliation, too.
