The un-summer

I was talking to a friend the other night and we went on and on about how bad our gardens are this year. With the lack of rain and the temperatures fluctuating between chilly and intense heat, the flowers and grass look horrible.

It's not even nice to sit outside. If the brown grass isn't hurting your feet, it's just depressing to look at the half-dead flowers that you spent a lot of money on a matter of weeks ago. If I'm out there, I'm feeling guilty that I'm not watering something....and watering is only half-helping the flowers at this point. I think they have secretly lost their will to live.

Sigh.

The thing that I love about nature is that while everything is suffering, there is some beauty out there...somewhere--you just gotta look really, really hard to find it. So, I put on my best Positive Polly attitude and went out to find something, anything good and happy out in the yard.

Here is my list all of the happy, good things in the back 40:
  1. Two wee frogs in the pond
  2. Lots and LOTS of snails in the pond
  3. A happy tomato plant
Uh........that's it.  That's all I could find.  And that's not really all that good because 2 of the 3 live in the pond--which is filled with water.

Sigh.

Remember my lovely green lawn?  Yeah, me too.

Yes, indeed. Even my tomato plants are looking sorry, and I water them faithfully. All I know to do is pull out my old stand-by:
This too shall pass.

But I like your attitude of looking for the positive!

Do ya reckon it all works this way so that we don't get bored with seeing the same old thing year after year, time after time?

Our veggies aren't turning out well this summer either - but it is because of too much rain! Our garden is very lush and green though, maybe a bit soggy ;-)
I'm so glad you found things that made you happy! Yay for the two froggies :)

I hope you get some water soon (outside of the pond). I can't stand watering so I definitely enjoy when it rains for that reason.

Fried green tomatoes!

I keep telling the hubby (as he complains about wanting to live in Vermont) that I picked the good place to live as our weather has been more normalized than the rest of the country's.

Ya know, I don't even bother anymore. When the temperatures are said to be 104* for the rest of the week....

I will however, bring some bacon and store bought lettuce to go with that tomato; when it turns red. ;-)

That's a shame. I wish you guys some rain or at the very least, some relief from that intense heat.

After suffering so many horrible floods that wiped out my yard countless times, I don't care if it never rains again. NEVER. I am relishing the browning grass and cracked vegetable garden soil. I just don't care anymore, I don't think I'll ever rest easy through a rainstorm again.

Careful what you wish for, Lin....the missing rain could come down, nice and wet, right on your head on your camping trip....but truthfully, I will probably go out and DANCE in it if we are so lucky...see you soon!

I'm mourning the lawn as well. I look on the bright side, at least I don't have to mow it.

Just went out and threw some old sheets over my wilting hydrangeas that are literally baking today, though I will say they are blooming to beat the band this year for the first time ever.

Let's do a rain dance her in the mid west!

We're happy to have sunpuddles today after so much rain. Everything is very green here!

surprisingly we have had a pretty equal mix of rain and sun. At least you found some positive stuff out there :)

Dang Lin, Your weather complaints are paralleled with mine.

Vanilla--The hose water isn't the same as the acid rain. Those plants need RAIN. Sadly, it doesn't look like there is gonna be any soon and my plants are showing it. :(

Chuck--Well, that's what we have seasons for, right? It's the GREEN season, for goodness sakes!

Duni--Yeah, I guess too much rain is bad too. Maybe we could work out a deal???

Anne--Oh, I hate watering with a passion. Hate. It. And the plants aren't so happy without the rain either. They don't like hose water as much as rain.

Grace--I'm holding out for the big juicy red ones!

Patty--Yeah, it may be cold, but at least you expect it. It's such a weird year--one I don't like very much.

Jodi--It's so depressing to see so much death out in the yard. :( Stay away from my tomato, chicky!

Silver--It's chilly for a couple of days, then intense heat. If it would stay one or the other, we could cope. I'm not having fun.

Rebecca--Yeah, I guess too much of either is a bad thing. Can we have an in-between???!

WillOaks--My friend, Judy, said the same thing. Can we please not be the drought busters??! Keep your fingers crossed that it rains when we are NOT camping!

Winnie--Mine are blooming crazy too! What is with that??!

Beaded Tail--Oh, gees. Send some of that rain here!

Ann--Well, the positives are drying up, Ann. You know, too much sun and heat is just as depressing as too much cold and rain. It's weird.

BumbleVee--Send that wet stuff here!! We are turning into raisins!

Mary Ann--That tomato isn't as big as it looks in the photo. While the plant is happy with the heat, I think it is wishing for some rain too. Hose water just isn't the same. :(

Jean--What happened to the frogs??? Don't you miss them when they are gone?? I do. :( I'm sorry that yours are gone too. I wonder if there is a frog meet-up place or something? ;)

I have a weed patch. Some of which I whacked off with the mower.
