Cheese is always the answer

The HR team is losing a member next week, our numbers are dwindling by the minute it seems. Justin is bailing for a new job, less stress, better pay and more opportunity--all things I can't argue with.  While we wish him well, I can't help but want to kick him in the shins for leaving. He's a nice guy, good to laugh with and he helps the team keep all the madness in perspective.  He's leaving a big void in the office if you ask me. Well, that and he's the tall guy I count on for getting all those binders down from the top shelf for me. Sigh.

A wee part of HR's responsibility  is that you try to keep morale up in spite of the everyday trials and tribulations of corporate America.  And while that is difficult on the best of days, losing an HR buddy leaves us down--in numbers and attitude.  It's hard to be positive when you lose a good team member....and it's highly unlikely that he will be replaced.  It's sort of the double whammy.

So, I take a deep breath, try to maintain my calm, and work to make the last few days light-hearted and not too guilt laden for the traitor.  Well, not really...I'm laying it on thick how we are screwed now that he's going to greener pastures.  But I am making him a special lunch to send him off, regardless.

We are toasting his departure and wishing him well with the traditional Thanks-for-Bailing Lunch...

fondue.

Yep. What better way to send your buddy off than with a pot of hot, melted cheese and some pointy sticks?

Sigh.

LOL, nice pointy sticks for lunch. Guess you are making a statement about him leaving. That really is too bad.

Nice shot of Hobbes!
Back in my office days that happened constantly. You're right, the person leaving never gets replaced. Enjoy the fondue!

Do you use the pointy sticks to hoist Justin just before you dip him in the fondue pot? He'll never forget that experience!

Its always sad, when a great co-worker and pal leave the nest for other opportunities. Maybe you will get a new person, who is just as nice. Enjoy your special lunch...I am sure he will be verya grateful!

Softie that I am, I always get choked up at going away parties like this. I try not to make a scene, but with fondue thrown in there--hey, I would have no responsibility for my actions. Hope you have more control.

Pretty soon it will just be you. I would then demand a very large raise.

I love the cheese and pointy stick send off. I don't blame you for making him feel guilty. That's your job as one of the abandoned.

Maybe he'll be able to find you a job in his new place so you have less stress and better pay too! Hope he enjoys his fondue!

Well at least there's fondue. *hugs* at losing a good team member. I'm sure accidentally sticking him with a pointy stick will make you feel a little better. LOL

You plan on poking him with the pointy sticks as he leaves, right?

Oh yes. This indeed sounds familiar Lin. One of my long-time HR coworkers is retiring in March. I've worked with her for over 13 years. We aren't posting to refill it. There's a lot of cut backs happening right now. Yup, that's right. We are the ones that have to keep staff morale up. Sigh...

Well, enjoy the fondue my friend!

you're funny even when you aren't totally happy about things....I like that...hahha...I come here for a good laugh.....

let me tell you about my day.... it cost $368.70 to have a guy unclog my kitchen sink drain... and hour and a half....and to make it even nicer, he flipped the blackest of black crap all over my wall, door and carpet in my exercise room....after dripping on most of the steps on the way in before he even got started...... I was screaming "Shit" at the top of my lungs when the big drips slopped on my dove grey grout.... and after that it was impossible to be very nice to him......just add one more ridiculous thing to our looooong list of 'things' that have been happening since mid July and you have my half a year.... oh, and...my cabinets are still not finished....
