It's just my luck--I will never get rear-ended by David Beckham. Sigh.

We celebrated Christmas with G'ma Phyl this weekend by going out for a lovely dinner, then going to her house to open presents.  Of course, things never go as easily as that.....it's the Duck and Wheel, remember?

G'ma Phyl is all hip on the cool restaurants now that she's retired.  She travels with this Senior group or that one, checking out new restaurants and then reports back to us.  G'ma picked out a really nice steakhouse for us to go to for our dinner--problem is, she rides a bus to these excursions and she doesn't know the precise details on getting there, so our finding this particular steakhouse involved a few wrong turns and one legal U-turn.

We finally found our way and enjoyed a nice dinner--a delicious dinner, actually.  We all ate ourselves silly and then everyone piled into the car all happy-like and excited to go home and open presents.  That's when Joe found the note....

Stuck on the driver's window of the van, there was a policeman's business card with the words "Please call" handwritten on the front.  Bummer.

As Joe dialed the number, our minds were racing with what on earth he wanted.  We didn't park near anyone initially, so I knew Joe couldn't be accused of hitting anyone.  We both got out to look at our car and didn't see any damage, but it was dark, so we sorta ruled that one out.  Then G'ma Phyl reminds Joe of that U-turn he made...she was sure he was going to jail.

After a trip to the local police department, we learned that we had indeed been hit--rear-ended by some dude who got out to look at the damage....and then proceeded to park further away so he could still enjoy his steak dinner without having to report that he just creamed my car.

My faith in humanity was restored as a mortified witness saw the entire thing and took the time out, either before or after his dinner, to call the police and file a report for us.  The cop said the witness was fuming--he just couldn't believe that someone would do such a thing.  Me--I'm still grateful for this witness--that he would do such a thing.  If it wasn't for him, I'd be stuck with the bill for a new fender--after just replacing this one only a few years ago. (Yes, I will be sending him a thank-you note and a gift card.)

So, yeah, I was rear-ended TWICE in 2012--neither time by David Beckham, sadly.  And while I'm eternally grateful to this witness who helped us,  I'm still cracking up at the fact that G'ma Phyl was totally selling Joe down the river for that legal U-turn.  For some reason, she doesn't find that fact nearly as hilarious as I do.

That is awesome a witness called. Someone ran into my car and left a huge dent about a year ago, then drove off. It still upsets me (it is a HUGE dent - it must've been a big truck that did it).

My car had 3 'hit and runs' in less than 2 years. Only once was there a witness that came forward. I always think it must be someone that doesn't have any insurance or too many points on their driver's license. But at least no one was hurt right? Glad you enjoyed a nice dinner though! :D

LOL, too bad about no rear ending by David Beckham. But that was so nice of that witness to report that to the police. There are some nice people left in the world.

Isn't it wonderful that they are still some nice people left in the world?

What? You have "legal U-turns" in the Big Windy?

Not so great to get bumped, great that someone cared to get that involved. Fender will be fixed, faith in humans and the kindness of strangers re-newed. So ...I don't know what Hobbes' problem is...

You have my human all worried now about U-turns, because she is most likely to make them in towns where she does not know the rules!

Humans should be more like kitties, and this witness, and NOT mind their own business! At least in situations like yours.

I am sure David Beckham gets around... there is still a chance for you!

You sure can tell a story, sorry for the "bump"!! But we focus on the kindness of others!

Dude has no right to be fuming. Dude hit your car! Maybe dude will learn his lesson? Probably not...but at least there was someone watching your bum...per

Well, it's good to know that there are people who still do the right thing and I'm glad that person saw your van get rear ended! Thankfully no one saw Joe's allegedly legal u-turn! If G'ma Phyl though it was illegal, it just might have been! LOL!

sucks that you got rear ended but good thing there was a witness who wasn't afraid to get involved. Some people have got a lot of nerve.

It's refreshing to see that there are still some nice people in the world who don't mind getting "involved" to help out a stranger! :)

Lisa--Oh no! That's terrible. :( I think I'm not so mad because the good outweighed the bad on this one. That made it all better, I think. Easier to swallow.

Catherine--We got the report today--it was an older guy too (65 years old)! Can you believe he would do that???! I can't believe you got hit 3 times!! Criminy...I'd start walking.

Marg--There ARE nice people. :) That's what I keep remembering.

Veronica Lee--Yep! I'm gonna send him a thank you note and a gift card. I can't believe he took so much of his own time to help us.

Vanilla--Yep. Are you on G'ma Phyl's side????! ;)

Chuck--And where is that? Giggling at G'ma Phyl in the backseat???

Grace--I still can't get over that someone went so far out of his way for us--isn't that nice? :) I'm gonna get that fender fixed too--to teach that jerk a lesson.

Sparkle--Usually there are "NO U-turn" signs here, but this one was specifically marked that you COULD...so he did. It's just funny that my mom remembered him making a U-turn in all of the driving we did! It's a good thing that there are still nosy people out there...and I'm one of 'em!

Debbie--I'm not even half mad about the car because of how nice that witness was. His kindness won over all the bad!

Patty--He's gonna learn his lesson because I'm gonna call his insurance company in the morning. AND I'm gonna get a new fender to show him NOT to do such things. Kindness saves the day!

Beaded Tail--The funny thing is that G'ma Phyl just got done saying that when she goes on these dinner outings that she doesn't pay much attention to the driving because she's on the bus! We were just teasing poor old G'ma Phyl. ;) I love how she was selling Joe down the river! Isn't that nice how that witness saved us??! Hooray!

Ann--I hope that I would do the same thing. I can't believe how nice it was for him to take the time out of his evening to make a report like that. Hooray!

Candy--Yep...he sure gave me faith in mankind again. :)

That G'ma! So hilarious! But sorry for the hit 'n run. Oooo, I'm so glad someone saw it and reported it. It makes the world right. I once witnessed an accident, pulled over and told the girl who caused it that I saw it. She tried to deny it immediately. The girl who got hit was so happy I stopped and said something because otherwise, it might have been her word against hers. Insurance company called later in the day for me to give a statement. Yep, all's right in the world.

Sorry you keep not getting rear ended by David Beckham. That is my wish for you for the new year.

Kathy--Is it wrong to want to be rear-ended by David Beckham?? I think not. A girl can dream, right? You are sorta like a hero with that calling out the offender. You earn a gold star in my book!

Not every day someone is willing to get involved like that. Glad it wasn't worse. And hooray fro grandmas that find good eateries.

That kind of story really does restore some faith in the human kind! I always have faith in the Hobbes kind =D.
